The high purity carbon monoxide (CO) is widely used in the chemical industry as the material to produce polyurethane or polycarbonate. Various CO sources are available including the reforming gases from LPG, the petroleum or coal and the by-product gas from iron and steel works. They, however, are the mixed gas of H2, CO, N2, CO2, H2O, and the process of carbon monoxide separation and recovery is used to produce high purity CO.

In the technical field of carbon monoxide separation and recovery process, Kobe Steel has experience of designing and building cryogenic and COSORB process. With this experience we developed the CO-PSA in a joint project with Kansai Thermochemistry Co., Ltd., and built the commercial plants with the CO capacity of 150~200Nm3/H in our Kakogawa Works and Kobe Works, in March, 1989, and in October, 1990, respectively. Further, we developed the improved PSA process that can separate and recover the CO gas from the methanol direct decomposition gas which is of low CO density.

We built two plants which employ the said improved PSA process. One with capacity of 750Nm3/H built in September 1994, and the other one was built in December 2001, of which capacity is over 1,400Nm3/H and this is considered the largest CO-PSA plant in the world. Both plants are continuously and smoothly operated in good condition.

While each process for carbon monoxide recovery has its own features as shown in the table below, we offer the best suitable process to meet the conditions such as plant scale, product's CO purity and application.
