March 25, 2003 - Orders rising for air pollution continuous monitoring systems

Kobe Steel anticipates that deliveries of air pollution continuous monitoring systems will double from the 35 supplied to designated monitoring stations in fiscal 2001 to 70 in fiscal 2002, ending March 2003. This is the second time in a row that Kobe Steel expects to gain the top domestic replacement share*.

Owing to new and replacement demand, Kobe Steel's sales of monitoring systems are anticipated to grow from the 700 million yen in fiscal 2002 to 1 billion yen in fiscal 2005.

To measure the amounts of sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide in air emissions, which are regulated by the Air Pollution Control Law, local governments operate monitoring stations at 2,100 locations throughout the country. The governments need to replace the monitoring systems every five to ten years.

Kobe Steel has been in the environmental monitoring business since 1993 and supplies a wide variety of monitoring systems. It currently offers water quality management systems, waste management systems, integrated environmental information systems, and environmental education systems. Kobe Steel also makes data collection and monitoring systems that supply governments and public offices with information on air, water, noise, vibration and dioxin emissions. To meet environmental laws and regulations, local governments need to monitor these emissions.

Note:
* The domestic replacement share is the number of new installed systems minus the number of systems removed divided by 2,100 systems.
