HIGHLIGHTS ON SOCIETY

We aim to build relationships based on trust with all of our stakeholders.

That is the basis of our social contribution activities throughout the Kobe Steel Group.

We believe that taking stakeholders’ opinions and suggestions seriously and building stronger relationships enable us to carry out high quality activities that are also down-to-earth.

This section outlines some of our initiatives aimed at living and developing hand in hand with society.

Highlights of Activities in Fiscal 2009

Society

We organize initiatives such as planting Mountain Hydrangea and picking up litter as part of “Clean Hiking” activities in an effort to protect the natural surroundings of Mount Rokko, which overlooks Kobe. We also run Nature Classroom activities to enable people to interact with plants and wild birds.

Steel Slag Used to Create Artificial Fish Reef

Having started life as a clinic at Kobe Steel, Shinko Hospital is now a fully-fledged medical institution contributing to healthcare in the community. In addition to healthcare activities, we also interact with the community through concerts and other such events held at the hospital.

Customers and business partners

The Special Jury Prize was presented to the Kobelion® SD air conditioning compressor for its outstanding energy-saving capabilities. We remain committed to providing our customers and business partners with award-winning technologies, now and in the future.

Iron Powder Used to Purify Contaminated Soil and Wastewater

Shareholders and investors

We organize tours of our plants and works for shareholders in an effort to give them a better understanding of the Kobe Steel Group. We have shown shareholders round various different plants, including our steel, aluminum, copper and machinery facilities.

Getting Close to Nature at Biotope Next to Power Plant

We provide career advice for female employees engaged in general duties via departmental managers, acting in the role of mentor. Our aim is to provide support to enable female employees to play a more prominent role in the workplace.

In January 2010, we organized the fourth Kobelco 1/17 Walk. Employees and their families taking part in the event walked up to 13km, identifying potential danger areas and confirming evacuation sites along the way
