Contributing to Society

We work hand in hand with society through community activities at all Kobe Steel Group plants and works.

The Kobe Steel Group undertakes a wide range of activities aimed at contributing to the local community at each of our plants and works.

All of our activities in partnership with society originate from individual plants and works, within their respective communities.

The following section outlines our approach to social contribution activities here at the Kobe Steel Group, focusing on five key areas: supporting future generations, promoting community development and exchange, promoting sports, protecting the local environment in Kobe, and providing disaster recovery support.

We invite you to read on and learn more about the Kobe Steel Group and our work in partnership with local communities and society as a whole.

Collecting Litter and Weeding in the Local Area Every Month

We started monthly clean-up activities in the vicinity of company premises, including collecting litter and weeding, because we wanted to do something to help the community on an ongoing basis. Participants are often surprised to see that so many people do not care about throwing away litter along public roads. This encourages the participants to make more of an effort to keep the area clean.

Promoting Sports

We are actively involved in a range of activities aimed at contributing to society through sports and other such activities, including supporting the National High School Rugby Tournament.

Social Contributions through Rugby

Special Support for National High School Rugby Tournament

The 90th National High School Rugby Tournament took place from December 27, 2010 to January 8, 2011 at the Hanazono Rugby Ground. The Kobe Steel Group has been providing special support for the tournament for six years now, alongside the Kobelco Cup National High School Combined Team Rugby Tournament every summer.

On January 8, 2011, just before the final, the 3rd Under-18 Combined Team East-West Match also took place, featuring players selected from those who took part in the 2010 Kobelco Cup. The chance to play at the hallowed Hanazono Rugby Ground was a dream come true for the high school rugby players taking part.

The number of schools was increased by four to a record 55 to mark the momentous 90th tournament.

Support for Sports NPO SCIX

The NPO Sports Community & Intelligence Complex (SCIX) (President: Seiji Hirao) was set up in 2000 with the aim of contributing to the local community through sports. On September 20, 2010, SCIX held a Sports Symposium to commemorate its 10th anniversary. The event featured speeches and panel discussions, and was attended by over 500 people.

Given that rugby sevens will be officially included in the Olympics for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, for both men and women, SCIX has also decided to launch a women's rugby team as part of the SCIX Rugby Club, in an effort to improve conditions for female rugby players and promote women's rugby.

Kobe Steel will continue to provide support for activities such as these in the future.

Disaster Recovery Support

We provide a range of support to assist with recovery from disasters all over the world, including the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Recovery Support Activities Following the Great East Japan Earthquake

In an effort to provide some relief for those affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and to do our bit to help the recovery process, we gave a ¥200 million donation on behalf of the Kobe Steel Group and provided construction machinery as well as emergency supplies worth another ¥100 million.

We were badly affected by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, and received a great deal of generous support from all over Japan at the time. This time around, we hope that the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake will get back on its feet as soon as possible, so that people's lives can return to normal.

Recovery Support Activities Following Overseas Disasters

We gave a ¥3 million donation on behalf of the Kobe Steel Group to help support those affected by the massive earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. Our donation helped to restore parts of the affected area via the Hyogo Prefecture Haiti Earthquake Fundraising Committee.

We also sent engineers, who worked on restoring one of our own blast furnace after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, over to Chile following the massive earthquake that hit the country in February 2010, to provide technical assistance based on their experiences.

Kobelco Steelers Charity Event Supports Those Affected by the Earthquake

In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Kobe Steel rugby team revised plans for its usual annual event to say thank you to its fans and instead organized the Kobe Steelers Charity Event on March 19, 2011. On the day of the event, players raised funds in support of those affected by the earthquake.

The ¥239,233 raised on the day was combined with some of the ticket receipts for the event to purchase winter coats. Including coats donated by the players themselves, a total of around 100 were sent out to the affected area via the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC).

Winter coats donated by the players were also sent to the affected area.
