Thorough Risk Management

In addition to measures for grasping and reducing environmental risk related to business operations, the Kobe Steel Group also establishes daily procedures for appropriate management of these risks.

Through environmental audits and other such measures we continuously pursue thorough legal compliance and strengthened environmental management.

Improving Environmental Management

At Kobe Steel sites we have introduced environmental management systems (EMS) such as ISO 14001, and carry out internal audits as well as audits by outside certifying agencies. Additionally, following in-company rules, both paper and on-site inspections are carried out by the Environmental Control & Disaster Prevention Department in the Head Office, so as to raise the overall level of environmental management.

Paper inspections are also carried out for Group companies. At sites where environmental risks are high EMS are introduced and, together with voluntary environmental measures, on-site verification is carried out by the Kobe Steel head office.

At the Kobe Steel Group Environmental Conference, held before on-site inspections, we aim to improve Groupwide environmental management through discussion of legal affairs and important issues covered during inspections.

Additionally, outside consultants are involved in the planning of on-site inspections so as to ensure an objective and reasonable approach.

In addition to working to extract and minimize environmental risks, we also carry out regular drills at each site to prepare for the possibility of an emergency.

For instance, at the Ibaraki Plant new employees must practice emergency responses for abnormalities in the industrial drainage systems, while at the Takasago Works we hold annual drills to practice deploying oil fences in the event of a spill due to earthquake or other causes.

Administrative Instruction and Guidance in Fiscal 2012

Kobe Steel and its Group companies committed no major infractions of environmental law in fiscal 2012. Companies did, however, receive instruction and guidance from related administrative organizations.
