The prize was started in fiscal 2013, as part of the KOBELCO GREEN PROJECT. The prize collects fairy tales, submitted by elementary, middle and high school students, about forests and other related natural themes. The winning stories are transformed into picture books by professional picture book writers, and then donated to schools, libraries and other organizations.
