Since acquiring Eco Action 21 certification in 2007, we have worked to roll out activities throughout the company. In particular, in fiscal 2015, as a result of three years of steady efforts—in response to a proposal from the worker in charge—we were able to reduce the amount of lubricant used to process wire rod primary materials by 25 percent in comparison to previous levels. This helped to greatly improve the working environment and reduce industrial waste. As a result, the worker received a special prize of recognition from the president of the company, serving as an inspiration for other workers at the plant.

The Itsukaichi Factory has completed its wastewater treatment facility, and the Numata Factory has begun pursuing environmental countermeasures in accordance with new product menus. In manufacturing, we are working to roll out mass production for new models—including hybrid equipment—to further improve fuel efficiency and meet gas emission regulations, reduce organic solvents through continued introduction of water-based paints, install more energy-efficient equipment, and develop three-stage preventative measures (immediate, expanded and final prevention) against oil leaks.

The Ogaki Factory builds mini excavators of 5.5 tons or less. We have now finished changing models, including those for small-lot production. Our updated models are quieter, more fuel efficient, and more environmentally friendly. We have also switched to LED in-factory lighting and are otherwise working to conserve energy. In fiscal 2016 we plan to further decrease environmental impact by increasing productivity and reducing waste.

At the Okubo Plant, we pursue fuel-efficient, low-noise and lightweight product development. In fiscal 2015 as a result of energy saving measures, our energy consumption dropped for the second year running. In Fiscal 2016, in addition to continuing energy saving measures, we will work to conserve the local environment through initiatives such as waste reduction and outdoor cleanup drives.

At Shinko Industrial, we pursue environmentally friendly operations, striving to exist in harmony with the local community of Kuryaoshi, which is rich in natural beautfy. In fiscal 2015 we switched fuels for heavy oil boilers in order to reduce CO2, and installed inverters for compressors. In fiscal 2016 we will strive to further reduce environmental impact through improvements to annealing furnaces.
