Thorough Risk Management

In addition to measures for grasping and reducing environmental risks related to business operations, the Kobe Steel Group also establishes daily procedures for appropriate management of these risks.

Through environmental audits and other such measures we continuously pursue thorough legal compliance and strengthened environmental management.

Environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 have been introduced at Kobe Steel locations. We aim to strengthen environmental management systems through application of PDCA cycles. Additionally, the Environmental Control & Disaster Prevention Department in the head office verifies compliance with laws and regulations at individual locations through document-based and on-site audits.

We aim to strengthen environmental management for Group companies as well, introducing environmental management systems such as ISO 14001 for locations where environmental risks are high. Kobe Steel verifies compliance with laws and regulations at each Group company location through document-based and on-site audits.

On-site audits and inspections aim to reduce risk by identifying those risks where further improvements are required.

In addition to risk extraction and reduction, regular emergency drills are also carried out at each location.

After drills, review meetings are held to identify issues and carry out PDCA cycles.

Examples of Administrative Instruction and Guidance

  • Upon changing contractors for intermediate treatment of industrial waste, industrial waste outside of the contract was handed over for treatment without exchange of a manifest. We were instructed by relevant bodies to prevent reoccurrence and be more thorough in compliance. As a result, we implemented rules for dealing with a change in intermediate contractors, as well as training for relevant employees.
  • We received guidance from relevant bodies as the exhaust gas flow rate at a heating furnace in a soot- and smoke-producing facility exceeded reported maximum values. The cause was an over-influx of combustible air at the time of measurement due to infrequent operation. We will now be more diligent in carrying out such measurements during stable operation.
