Kobe Steel, Ltd.

Kobe Steel, Ltd. announces that it has completed refurbishment work of a steel plate finishing rolling mill at Kakogawa Works, and the mill has resumed commercial operations.

The finishing rolling mill is a machine that rolls heated slabs from the heating furnace to achieve the desired product thickness after the width increasing process in the rough rolling mill. The refurbishment work not only renewed the finishing rolling mill’s main body and motor, but it also improved its rigidity* and other functionalities. It enables us to offer higher quality and shorter production lead times, resulting in improved business performance, as well upgrading manufacturing technologies for high-functional steel plate products.

Since our steel plate plant started operation in 1968, we have been working to ensure safety and security in community development and manufacturing. Kobe Steel’s original steel plate products include Eco-View Plus (highly durable steel plate for bridges), and Ex-Factor (fatigue-resistant steel plate that can prevent fatigue cracking for an extended period of time). In addition, our Company’s steel plate business has been offering unique solutions to customers in cooperation with the welding business division and the Technical Development Group.

The plant refurbishment has elevated our steel plate products to the highest level of performance and competitiveness in the industry. Going forward, our Company will continue to supply highly functional steel plates to meet the various needs of our customers and society, including achieving carbon neutrality and increasing the national resilience, with a view to a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives.

  • * Rigidity (of a rolling mill) refers to the ability to withstand deformation that occurs in the vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directions of a rolling mill during rolling of a material with four upper and lower rolls. The greater the robustness and the less deformation of the rolling mill, the fewer dimensional variations will occur in steel plate products. This refurbishment has improved the rigidity of the finishing rolling mill.
