Kobe Steel has expanded the low-CO2 aluminum product Kobenable® Aluminum lineup to include extrusion and fabricated products from Chofu Works and suspension products from Daian Works, which have undergone third-party verification by DNV for specific customers, in addition to aluminum rolled products manufactured at Moka Works, which underwent verification by a third-party certification body*1 (DNV*2) in 2024.
Kobenable® Aluminum products for aluminum extrusions, fabrications, and suspensions have the following three features:
The plan is to broaden the scope of application beyond specific customers, while expanding the range of CO2 reduction measures as a means of obtaining CO2 reduction effects, in order to achieve maximum CO2 reduction effects and provide quantitative value to customers, as we strive for a decarbonized society.
The Kobe Steel Group (also known as the Kobelco Group) is working on the transformation into an appealing company, as set out in its Medium-Term Management Plan (Fiscal 2024–2026). As part of this effort, we are advancing an initiative called KOBELCO-X, which spans a wide range of transformations, including this one aimed at green transformation (GX)—Contributing to decarbonization through providing the low-CO2 aluminum product Kobenable® Aluminum.
Our Group’s current Medium-Term Management Plan also aims to take on the challenge of realizing carbon neutrality as one of its priority issues, and we believe that providing low-CO2 aluminum products will help us reach this goal. The Group will continue to move forward with its transformation initiatives by integrating its diverse technologies, products, and services in a unique way in order to become a more appealing company to all of its stakeholders with a view to a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives.
*1 The verification by a third-party certification body (DNV) confirmed that Kobe Steel’s management regulations concerning the sale of Kobenable® Aluminum have been properly established in accordance with global standards and guidelines such as the GHG Protocol and the management standards for the manufacturing and distribution processes as agreed between Kobe Steel and DNV.
*2 DNV is a third-party certification body that assesses green house gas (GHG) emission reductions and GHG emissions by product.
*3 The mass balance method is a method to allocate specific characteristics to a certain portion of products based on the input amount of raw materials with such characteristics when there is a mix of raw materials with and without such characteristics (e.g., low CO2) in the manufacturing process.
