Kobe Steel installs high-speed handling crane for domestic shipments at Kakogawa Works
February 21, 2005

Kobe Steel, Ltd. has installed and started operating a new steel-handling gantry crane in January at its flagship Kakogawa Works to increase loading capacity.  The 74-ton crane can handle all of Kobe Steelfs products, including sheet, plate, and slabs.  It replaces the previous 10-ton gantry crane used for loading only wire rod.

The 500-million-yen crane is one of the worldfs fastest steel-handling cranes, with a hoisting speed of 42 m/min and traverse speed of 140 m/min.  Conventional cranes of this variety have a hoisting speed of 40 m/min. and traverse speed of 80 m/min.

Eighty percent of Kakogawa Worksf finished and semifinished products are shipped by sea.  As cargo handling takes place outdoors, rain, rough waves and other weather conditions make it difficult to utilize the maximum loading capacity.

The volume of coastal shipping has been increasing due to the growing demand for steel, the shipment of semifinished products to Kobe Works, and the modal shift from surface shipping to coastal shipping.
