Message from the Chief Officer Responsible for Companywide Environmental Management

Through environmental management based on three visions, Kobe Steel aims to contribute to “a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives.“

Group Environmental Management System

We envision a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives. In realizing that vision, we assume the important responsibility of passing on to future generations a healthy global environment in which all forms of life can thrive. We wholeheartedly acknowledge this obligation and are moving forward with concrete initiatives that align with the Six Pledges of KOBELCO Men and Women. In addition, we have established the Six Initiatives for Environmental Management and are practicing environmental management accordingly.

The KOBELCO Group has been and will continue to utilize its individuality and technologies and care for the environment in all aspects while taking on the challenge of resolving social issues including those facing the global environment.

In recent years, non-financial initiatives in corporate management have been attracting attention. Recognizing that environmental initiatives are essential for long-term enhancement of corporate value, the KOBELCO Group practices environmental management in line with the Basic Environmental Management Policy based on three core approaches: pursuing environmentally friendly manufacturing; contributing to the environment through technologies, products and services; and coexisting and cooperating with society.

In particular, we recognize initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions as a top management priority and have established a system enabling group-wide efforts centered on the CO2 Reduction Promotion Subcommittee. Taking climate change not only as a risk but also as a business opportunity, we approach this issue from both angles and have set targets for fiscal 2030. In addition to reducing CO2 emissions from its own production processes, the KOBELCO Group will further expand its variety of technologies, products and services that contribute to reduction of CO2 emissions with the aim of making even greater contributions to reducing CO2 emissions while meeting the needs of society.

We are also working actively on the efficient use of water resources, the conservation of which has received attention in recent years. In fiscal 2019, we maintained a high water recycling rate at around 96% and intend to continue this high standard.

Maintaining the highest sense of ethics and professionalism, we envision a world in which people, now and in the future, can fulfill their hopes and dreams while enjoying safe, secure, and prosperous lives, as stated in KOBELCO’s View of the Future. With that view in mind, we are committed to environmental friendliness in all aspects of our manufacturing, and we are striving to promote environmental management that contributes to the betterment of the natural environment through our technologies, products and services.
