Highlights of the Kobe Steel Group's Activities in Fiscal 2011
Environmental Report
1. Environmentally friendly manufacturing
High efficiency gas turbines are now up and running at our Kakogawa Works, as part of our ongoing commitment to improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the production process.
2. Contributing to the environment through environmentally friendly products, technologies and services
Our 1180Mpa high strength automotive steel, which we developed to help reduce the weight of vehicles, has become the first material of its kind to be used in major body components in cars.
3. Disclosure of environmental information
We exhibited a range of products designed to meet modern-day needs, including screw compressors that help reduce CO2 emissions, compact binary generation systems that harness geothermal heat and hot water, and our unique flared seawalls, which deflect high waves thanks to their curved surfaces.
4. Cooperation with the local community
We participated in eco classes at a children's center as part of the City of Kobe's Kids Eco-challenge 21 project. As the next generation rests on our children's shoulders, the aim is to help them appreciate the importance of the environment and give them the opportunity to get involved.
5. Full staff participation
We have been working to achieve our power saving targets at all facilities of the Kobe Steel Group, through initiatives such as carefully controlling air conditioning and lighting, operating production facilities at night and on weekends, and using in-house generators.
6. Comprehensive risk management
We carry out onsite environmental surveys at overseas group companies as well as domestic locations, to reinforce environmental management. In fiscal 2011, we carried out inspections in Singapore and Malaysia.
