Reader Evaluations

As part of our stakeholder communication activities here at the Kobe Steel Group, we conduct a reader survey every year when we publish our Sustainability Report. We received the following comments and opinions from a wide range of readers in response to our fiscal 2011 report.

We will continue to incorporate readers' individual opinions into our reports in the future, in an effort to create a more interactive Sustainability Report.

Content That Was Particularly Interesting or Impressive

  • Technical Support Project to Restore Blast Furnace at Huachipato Steelworks – I would like to see the group getting involved in more activities like this around the world, to make the most of its experience and technology in the field of disaster recovery.
  • Harnessing Untapped Resources via Third-Generation Ironmaking (ITmk3®) – I had read about this in the newspaper, but it wasn't clear because it was just a short article. The report really helped me understand the potential.
  • Environmental Activities and Performance – I was really impressed by the wide range of areas in which the group is making use of resources that would otherwise be thrown away.
  • Contributing to Biodiversity – I was impressed by the group's efforts to address global issues.
  • Registration under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's New Technology Information System – I enjoyed reading about Kobelco Construction Machinery's hydraulic excavators reducing fuel consumption by around 20%, mainly because my son is interested in heavy machinery.
  • Disaster Prevention Activities/Contributing to Society – I think the group's activities should serve as a model to other companies.
  • Nadahama Science Square – I would love to get the chance to visit some day, to try out all of those sensory experiences for myself.

Content Readers Would Like to See Included in the Next Report

  • I would like to see the group's CSR activities arranged in chronological order, along with their results, goals for the future and specific targets.
  • Iron and steel seems like a very male-dominated sector. How about some information on women in the workplace and recruiting female employees?
  • I would like to see a feature on any employees who have been involved in long-term activities, in Japan or overseas, as part of a volunteer leave or similar scheme.
  • I would like to see a list of all your Only One research and development results. I would like to know more about the differences between your Only One products and conventional products, and your plans for Only One products in the future.
  • I would like to know how your CSR activities differ from other companies. I think you should make more of the fact that your activities are more specialized than other companies.
  • I would like to know more about the results of your human resource activities, including the effects of cross-industry and young engineer exchange schemes, human resource development programs, World Skills Competition activities, etc.

Other Comments

  • If you approach environmental and social contribution activities head-on, I think the resulting technologies would open up new possibilities and also help improve employees' skills and motivation levels. I think that would really contribute to the development of Kobe Steel in the future.
  • The report clearly outlines the ways in which the group contributes to the environment and society, and is very easy to read. Use of large print was also helpful.
  • Overall, I think your CSR report is very well put together. Please keep on raising employees' awareness and changing your corporate culture, so that report also includes negative data and information.
  • The report contains a huge amount of information and makes me want to know more about the Kobe Steel Group's operations. I'm sure it must have moved readers in various different ways.
  • I found some of the technical terms and explanations hard to understand. It would have helped to have a glossary or notes on new technologies at the end of the report, to provide additional explanations where necessary.
