Direct Reduced Iron field

The direct reduced iron (DRI) field has been a significant part of our business since the 1970s, when we constructed a MIDREX^® direct reduction plant was constructed in Qatar in 1978 and through the acquisition of Midrex Technologies, Inc. (USA) in 1983.Our Company and Midrex Technologies have established a long and successful track record in this field worldwide, and the MIDREX^® Process is now one of our Group's most distinctive and promising products.
As hydrogen utilization and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) gain attention as a means of achieving carbon neutrality, Kobe Steel, together with Midrex Technologies, offer flexible solutions for various stages of the energy transition toward hydrogen utilization. By offering the MIDREX^® Process, we will contribute to the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the realization of carbon neutrality in the steel industry.

MIDREX^® Process

The MIDREX^® Process, our proprietary technology, accounts for 80% of the global production of gas-based direct reduced iron, with nearly 100 Midrex shaft furnace DR modules delivered to 21 countries around the world.

Pellet Plant (KOBELCO Pelletizing System)

Starting with the first unit built at our own steelworks, we have been designing, constructing, and providing technical assistance for KOBELCO-Pelletizing System all over the world. The quality of the pellets produced at the KOBELCO-Pelletizing System has been highly praised by customers.

FASTMET^® process

The FASTMET^® process recycles wastes from steelworks, such as blast furnace dust and BOF dust, as a raw material to produce direct reduced iron, while recovering high purity crude zinc oxide as a by-product.
