Environmental Accounting

We are always working to preserve the environment at the Kobe Steel Group. We monitor the costs and effects of our environmental activities and continue to disclose information in order to give our stakeholders a better understanding of our initiatives.

Environment-Related Investment

To reduce its impact on the environment, investment in the building and maintenance of pollution prevention facilities is ongoing, and wide-ranging measures for the environment have been introduced.

Capital investment for fiscal 2011 totaled approximately 1.85 billion yen and expenditure reached about 37.12 billion yen. Some 35% of this expenditure went to atmospheric pollution prevention, 13% went to water pollution prevention, and 29% went to resource recycling.

We also contribute to the environment through our products, technologies and services. We have developed technology to recycle dust that contains iron for instance, and products such as a binary generation system. In fiscal 2011, approximately ¥5.8 billion, or 15% of our total expenditure, was spent on developing products and technologies such as these.
